ABOUT PACK 101

Pack 101 is one of the oldest packs in the Aloha Council with over 50 years of history. Our sponsor is the Hawaii Kai Lions Club.

Pack 101 is Hawaii Kai's Cub Scout Pack — a community of families raising kids who are curious, capable, and connected to something bigger than themselves. Our Scouts hike the Koʻolau ridges, serve the shores of Maunalua Bay, camp at Bellows Air Force Station Beach, and march in the Hawaii Kai Holiday Parade. They volunteer at the Honolulu Marathon and Hapalua Half Marathon every year — and they cross the Arrow of Light bridge into Scouts BSA ready for whatever comes next. Pack 101 spans six dens — Lion through Arrow of Light — covering Kindergarten through 5th grade. Each den has its own Den Leader, its own monthly meeting schedule, and its own adventure trail. But every den is part of the same Pack: same Pack meetings, same campouts, same hikes, same parade. The Pack is the community. The den is where the Scouting happens.

CUB SCOUT RANKS

Cub Scouts is for boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade.  Scouts join the rank corresponding their year in school:

  • Lion - Kindergarten
  • Tiger - First grade
  • Wolf - Second grade
  • Bear - Third grade
  • Webelos - Fourth grade
  • Arrow of Light - Fifth grade

What to Expect when you Join Pack 101

Meetings are held in the recreation room by the tennis courts, on the right as you enter the park.

Meetings — Pack 101 holds approximately 10 Pack meetings per year on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 7:30 PM, following the Hawaii school calendar. Two August meetings kick off the year: Return to Scouting Night (for returning families) and Recruitment Night (open to new families). The Blue & Gold Banquet in late February is held on a Sunday evening and counts as the February Pack meeting. Pack meetings use a rotating activity station format — four simultaneous stations led by parent volunteers, with dens rotating every five minutes.

Hikes — Pack 101 goes on three Pack hikes per year: Labor Day weekend in September, after Fall Break in October, and in late April. Hikes depart at 8:00 AM Saturday mornings. Recent trails have included Judd Trail, Koko Crater Botanical Garden, and the Kaiwi Coast. All hikes are family-friendly. Bring water, reef-safe sunscreen, and sturdy shoes.

Campouts — Two overnight campouts anchor the Pack year. The fall campout is at Bellows Air Force Station Beach in early October. The spring campout is planned aboard the USS Missouri — one night, $100 per person includes food. Bellows AFS is the fallback. Both are open to all dens and families. Arrow of Light Scouts complete their patrol campout requirement at the spring campout.

Service & Fundraising — Pack 101 serves the community every September at the annual Wetlands Service Day. The Pack also runs two volunteer fundraisers: the Honolulu Marathon water station in December and the Hapalua Half Marathon water station in April. These fundraisers offset Pack costs and keep dues manageable. All families are expected to participate in at least one fundraiser per year.

Special Events — Pack 101 marches in the Hawaii Kai Holiday Parade every November, holds an annual fishing trip in January, and races in the Pinewood Derby each March. The Blue & Gold Banquet in late February is the Pack's signature celebration — a potluck dinner with rank awards and the biggest gathering of the year. Each of these events has a designated lead volunteer who coordinates logistics from start to finish.

Family Role — Scouting is a family program. Parents are partners, not drop-off drivers. Lion parents attend every meeting alongside their Scout. All families are expected to volunteer at Pack events — station volunteers at meetings, drivers and chaperones at hikes and campouts, and water station volunteers at fundraisers. Pack 101 also needs nine lead volunteers annually for our signature events — ask Shane how to take one on.

Dues — Annual dues are $300 per Scout total. $150 is paid directly to Pack 101 (collected by Treasurer Jeff Schulberg). The remaining $150 is paid online at my.scouting.org by each family directly to Scouting America. Charter renewal happens each January.

What Makes It Great — Pack 101 is Hawaii Kai. Our Scouts have hiked the Kaiwi Coast, camped at Bellows, served the wetlands, volunteered at the Honolulu Marathon, marched down Keahole Street, and crossed the bridge into Scouts BSA — together. The Scout Oath — 'to do my duty to God and my country...to help other people at all times...to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight' — is the promise they make and renew at every Pack meeting. That promise is what Pack 101 is built on.
